As the 2025 WASSCE exams approach, one key area you must not overlook is the English Language Oral Test. This section of the paper is very important, and preparing for it properly can give you an extra boost in your English score.

The Oral Test is made up of seven different parts, each testing your listening and comprehension skills. You’ll need to pay close attention to instructions and be able to pick out subtle differences in pronunciation, sentence structure, and meaning.

TEST 1 – Sound Recognition (3 Words per Line)

Listen closely. Each line contains three words. One of the words will be spoken aloud. You are to shade the letter next to the word you hear on your answer sheet.

Example:

     A. read       B. ride       C. rid

TEST 2 – Word Discrimination (3 Words per Line)

Each line still has three similar-sounding words. Identify the one you hear and shade the correct letter.

     A. poke       B. pack       C. perk
     A. zeal       B. deal       C. dill
     A. crow       B. crew       C. crude

TEST 3 – Sound Similarities (4 Words per Line)

Now there are four options in each line. Listen and pick the word you hear.

Example:

     A. wish       B. witch      C. wash       D. watch

TEST 4 – Sentence Recognition (3 Sentences)

Each group contains three similar sentences. Only one will be read aloud. Choose it.

     A. I meant rice
     B. I meant mice
     C. I meant slice

TEST 5 – Rhyming Words

You’ll hear a word that doesn’t appear in the options. Instead, choose the word that rhymes with it.

Example:

Spoken word: “mat”

     A. mop        B. cap       C. cat       D. map

TEST 6 – Matching Questions with Given Answers

Each answer is repeated. Choose the question that fits it.

Example:

Answer: He closed the door.

     A. Who closed the door?
     B. Did he close the door?
     C. Did he open the door?

     A. Is Kwame the teacher?
     B. Is Kwesi the pupil?
     C. Is Kwesi the teacher?

     A. Did you sweep the room?
     B. Did you sleep in the room?
     C. Did you sweep the floor?

     A. Is she selling snacks?

     C. Is she selling fruits?

     A. Was Linda late?
     B. Was Linda early?
     C. Was Lucy late?

TEST 7 – Dialogue Understanding

You’ll hear a short dialogue. Decide which of the three statements best describes it.

Example:

Man: I think he did well.
Woman: I’m not so sure.

     A. Both are sure
     B. The man is confident, the woman is not
     C. Both are unsure

     A. Both are doubtful
     B. The man is confident, the woman is unsure
     C. The woman is confident, the man is unsure

     A. The man is polite, the woman is not
     B. Both are impolite
     C. Both are polite

TEST 8 – Conversations & Narratives

Listen to a short dialogue or story, then pick the correct interpretation.

CONVERSATION

From the dialogue, we learn that:

     A. Proverbs are used to mock others
     B. Proverbs can be part of games
     C. Proverbs are never used in daily speech

NARRATIVE

From the story, it’s clear that:

     A. Mature people avoid revenge
     B. It’s better to retaliate quickly
     C. Weak people forgive easily
